Traffic Calming

The object of traffic calming is to manage traffic and vehicle speeds, modify driver behaviour, and, in some circumstances, reduce the volume of traffic. Traffic calming reduce risk of crashes and can enable local residents, including children, to reclaim the streets as social places where walking and cycling can occur safely.

Recent research on traffic calming measures in 20mph zones confirms their effectiveness; crashes involving child pedestrians or cyclists fell by more than 60%, and there was a 5% reduction in accidents for each 1mph reduction in speed.
