Construction 
The following Washington State Department of Transportation projects may delay traffic in Asotin, Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Garfield, King, Kittitas, Walla Walla, Yakima and neighboring counties during this period. Motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling in these areas and “Give ‘em a Brake” in construction zones. Please note: Many of these activities are subject to good weather conditions and schedules may change. 



Maintenance/Utility Operations
US 12 Interstate Bridge between Clarkston and Lewiston:
Monday, May 12 through Wednesday, May 14, each night from 9 p.m. through 2:30 a.m., WSDOT crews will raise and lower the bridge periodically during testing and maintenance operations. Traffic will be delayed for up to 20 minutes each time.

SR 24/SR 241 to Cold Creek Rd. – Add Passing Lanes

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, eastbound and westbound traffic will be restricted to flagger controlled alternating one-way traffic during daylight hours. Drivers can expect minor delays.

Project Description:
This project will construct a passing lane uphill in both directions on SR 24 between SR 241 and Cold Creek Road. Constructing a passing lane will improve safety, reduce collisions, and increase traffic mobility. For more information visit:

SR 14/Benton County Roadside Safety

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
On Friday, May 9 and Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, motorists should expect eastbound and westbound traffic to be restricted to one-way traffic in two separate locations during daylight hours. Drivers should expect minor delays.

Project Description:
This project is located in Benton County on SR 14, beginning at the junction with US 395 at milepost 181 and continues west on SR 14 to the Benton/Klickitat County Line at milepost 152. This project will improve safety on this portion of SR 14 by installing centerline rumble strips, installing guardrail, and flattening shoulder slopes.

I -182 Columbia River Bridges - Joint Repair

Project Description:
This project will replace the expansion joints on the I-182 Columbia River Bridges.

Maintenance/Utility Operation
US 395/20th Street in Kennewick: On Monday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, the southbound off-ramp to 20th Street will be closed for pavement marking installation. Signs, cones and a portable electronic message board will direct traffic through the workzone.

Garfield County

Maintenance/Utility Operations

US 12 Alpowa summit area: Monday through Thursday, May 12-15, from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in a six mile stretch of US 12 from milepost 411 to milepost 417, drivers will be restricted to one lane piloted traffic. WSDOT crews will be pouring asphalt into cracks in the pavement.

I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East Project - Geotechnical Exploratory Drilling

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
I-90, Keechelus Lake vicinity:
Lane and/or shoulder closures are scheduled for Sunday, May 11 through Friday, May 16.

During daylight hours, Sunday, May 11, contractor drilling crews will be working on the eastbound and westbound roadway shoulders between mileposts 55 and 60. This work will require shoulder closures. No delays are expected.


During daylight hours, Monday, May 12, through Friday, May 16, contractor drilling crews will be working in both the eastbound and westbound lanes and shoulders of I-90 between mileposts 58 and 60. Drivers should expect minor delays as lane and shoulder closures are required during this activity. Crews will use truck mounted drill rigs in the roadway to collect soil and rock core samples. WSDOT will use the information from these samples for the design of the proposed roadway walls and embankments in the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East - Hyak to Keechelus Dam Project.


Project Description:
WSDOT will improve I-90 by providing a safer, more efficient six-lane freeway from Hyak to Keechelus Dam. Crews will also will straighten roadway curves, replace old pavement, and reduce rockfall and avalanche hazards. Wildlife and watershed structures will improve habitat conditions. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010.

I-90 – Yakima River Bridge - Bridge Deck Repair

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
I-90 eastbound near Cle Elum:
Starting at midnight on Sunday, May 11, and remaining closed until 9 a.m., Friday, May 16, traffic will be restricted to one lane eastbound on I-90 near the Golf Course Rd. interchange. The speed limit is reduced in this area to 50 mph. Drivers should expect back-ups during peak travel times. Bicycles will detour around the work zone onto Westside Rd. to Cle Elum.

Project Description:
This project repairs the bridge deck on the eastbound bridge at Milepost 78.7, Yakima River Bridge, between Golf Course Road Interchange & Bullfrog Interchange. The speed limit will be reduced in this area to 50 mph in the work zone.

US 12/Columbia Way to Northern Railroad Bridges - Paving

On Monday, May 12, through Thursday, May 15, during daylight hours, eastbound and westbound lanes will be restricted to piloted alternating one-way traffic for pavement grinding and paving operations.

Project Description:
This project is located in Walla Walla County near the US 12 junction and SR 730. The project will replace two miles of asphalt, guardrail, signs, and pavement markings on US 12.

US 12/Frenchtown Vicinity to Walla Walla – Add Lanes

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
US 12 and Pine Street: On Monday, May 12, through Friday, May 16, during daylight hours, drivers should expect minor delays as WSDOT moves equipment across the intersection. On Thursday, May 15, there will be alternating one-way traffic for paving operations during the morning hours.

US 12 and Dell Avenue: As of Tuesday, March, 18, a portion of Dell Avenue has been permanently closed to accommodate the new US 12 alignment. Dell Avenue now has cul-de-sacs at each end of the closed section. The remaining sections of Dell Avenue may be accessed on the north side of US 12 from Duncan Lane and Pine Street Extension. 

Project Description:
This project is phase six of eight phases that improve US 12 from SR 124 (Burbank) to Walla Walla. This approximately eight mile project will reconstruct US 12 from McDonald Road to Walla Walla as a four lane divided highway, with improved capacity and enhanced safety. For more information visit:

US 12 and SR 124 Pasco to Clarkston Centerline Rumble Strips

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
US 12, Starting in Clarkston: on Monday, May 12, and ending near Pomeroy on Friday, May 16, during daylight hours, eastbound and westbound lanes will be restricted to piloted alternating one-way traffic for a moving operation installing centerline rumble strips.

Project Description:
This project is located in Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield and Asotin Counties on US 12 and SR 124. The project will install centerline rumble strips and recessed pavement markers on US 12 and SR 124 outside of city limits.

Maintenance/Utility Operations
US 12/McDonald Road: 
Monday through Friday, May 12-16, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. traffic will be restricted eastbound to one lane. Both shoulders will be closed as crews prepare, pave and re-stripe the new turn lane and shoulders.
Winery developer and contractor Wubben, will be adding new shoulder areas at the intersection of US 12 and McDonald Road to make room for a new eastbound left turn lane.

US 12 Snake River Bridge near Burbank: Monday through Thursday, May 12-15, between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., traffic will be restricted to one lane in one direction at a time for bridge inspection.

SR 241/Rattlesnake Hills Vicinity Roadside Safety

On Friday, May 9, Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13,  southbound and northbound traffic will be restricted to piloted alternating one-way traffic during daylight hours. Drivers can expect minor delays.

Project Description:
This project is located in Yakima County on SR 241, beginning near the junction with SR 24 at milepost 24 and continues south on SR 241 to the north side of Sunnyside at milepost 10. The project will realign two s-curves just south of the SR 241/SR 24 junction and update guardrail and signing throughout the project limits. SR 823 - Goodlander to Harrison Rd - Build Sidewalk

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
The northbound right lane will be closed on SR 823 (N. Wenas Road) from Goodlander Road to Harrison Road until Friday, May 16 to work on the roadway and sidewalk.

Project Description: 
The project will provide a much needed sidewalk on the east side of SR 823 between Goodlander Road and Harrison Road. WSDOT will also improve the intersection at Goodlander Road to allow easier right-turns onto northbound SR 823. For more information visit:

I-82/Selah Creek to Yakima – Paving

Current Week Traffic Advisory: 
On Friday, May 9 and Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16, motorists should expect eastbound and westbound traffic to be restricted to one lane in each direction during daylight hours. Minor slowdowns through the construction areas are anticipated.

Work will also take place at the Yakima Training Center and East Selah Road interchange on and off ramps. The on and off ramp traffic will be detoured onto the shoulder at times to facilitate this work. Delays or backups are not anticipated.

Project Description:
This project is located in Yakima County on I-82, beginning at the Twin Bridges at milepost 31 and continues on I-82 to and including the Selah Creek Bridges at milepost 24. This project will rehabilitate the existing mainline pavement on I-82 in both directions and will include the East Selah Road interchange and the Yakima Training Center Road interchange. Upgrades will also be made to the guardrail, signing, illumination system, and bridge expansion joints.

US 97/ Fort Road near Toppenish:
On Tuesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on southbound US 97, the left through lane will be closed at the intersection with Fort Road while utility work is done for Charter Communications.

97 Biggs Rapids - Sam Hill Bridge Deck Replacement

Current Week Traffic Advisory:
US 97, Closed in both directions at the Biggs Rapids-Sam Hill Bridge (milepost 0)
A complete closure of the Biggs Bridge began January 2, for construction activities. The bridge will reopen to traffic on May 23, 2008 at 12 noon; a second closure will begin after Labor Day 2008. There are several detours available using the US 197 Dalles Bridge via I-84, State Route 14 or the I-82 Columbia River Bridge for eastbound traffic. Advance warning signs are in place. This project is scheduled for completion fall 2009. US 12 White Pass Vicinity Slope Stabilization

US 12, Five miles west of White Pass: Work is suspended until late spring due to snow.

Project Description:
This project stabilizes three roadside slopes on US 12 from SR 123 near Packwood to the Rimrock Reservoir. Work will remove loose rock to reduce the potential of rocks falling on the roadway. For more information on this project visit: US 12 White Pass vicinity slope stabilization
