CONSTRUCTION 

US 101 - Sol Duc River Bridge - Bridge Painting

Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project

Description: Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project. The National Park Service & Federal Highway Administration will rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 around Lake Crescent and 4 miles of East Beach Road to address safety and long‐term maintenance issues.

Construction delays will begin mid-July, 2017. Four-hour delays will begin after Labor Day on the western half of U.S. Highway 101 (west from Barnes Point). Specific dates for these 4-hour delays will be announced and posted 2 weeks in advance.

The project will continue through 2019.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 8 - Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek - Remove Fish Barriers

Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish by constructing bridges across the Middle and East Forks of Wildcat Creek.

Work schedule: Westbound SR 8 is reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic. The SR 8 speed limit in the area is reduced to 45 mph. This reconfiguration is illustrated in this YouTube video.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary is closed to all traffic around the clock through summer 2019. During the closure, drivers headed to McCleary will be directed to the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

SR 8 W of Old Sand Crk. Rd. to Jct. US 101 - Paving
Highway: 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 6.75 - 11.5 and 17.25 - 20.63

Description: Crews will repave sections of SR 8 between US 101 in Thurston County and McCleary.
Work Schedule: Portions of westbound SR 8 will reduce to one lane. The single-lane closures are scheduled to occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each weekday.

SR 105/W of Constantine  Way to Edward P Smith Dr –  Chip Seal

Description: Drivers on State Route 105 between south Aberdeen and the Stafford Creek Corrections Center may encounter delays during a road surface rehabilitation project.

During the work, drivers will encounter daytime one-way alternating traffic. Drivers are advised to be prepared for delays and drive through the construction zone with caution.

The speed limit on SR 105 will be temporarily reduced between mileposts 41.98 and 47.66 during the chip seal project. WSDOT will lower the current 55 mph speed limit to 35 miles per hour during construction activities.
Work Schedule: Drivers can expect shoulder closures and occasional alternating one-way traffic 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 26-29. Inclement weather could increase the time the project is under way.

US 12, SR 109, SR 112 Chip Seal

Drivers are strongly advised to sign up to receive automated messages for up to date bridge information. 

This work requires crews to take precise measurements of the internal mechanical systems that operate the drawspan. In order to take these measurements, crews need to have little to no tidal influence on the bridge. Much of the work is coordinated to occur during night slack tides when there is little water movement and light winds. In order to have the least amount of impact to traffic, we generally limit closures during overnight hours.


SR 303, SR 304 to WM E. Sutton Rd NE – Paving

SR 302 - N of E Victor Rd - Culvert Replacement

Description: Crews will replace two failing culverts and install infrastructure to help stabilize the highway.

Work schedule: WSDOT has good news to share with drivers - crews have reopened State Route 302 at milepost 4.5 near the Mason/Pierce County line, which had been closed to traffic since June 9 for roadway repairs.

The roadway reopening – roughly 18 hours ahead of schedule – follows successful efforts to stabilize a sloughing portion of SR 302 and replace a broken culvert under the highway. In addition to opening the road, the speed limit has been restored to its original 40 mph.
WSDOT thanks commuters for their patience as crews have worked to repair this portion of state highway.

I-5 - M Street to Portland Avenue - HOV

Description: This project rebuilds Pacific Avenue and McKinley Way bridges spanning I-5. It builds a new northbound SR 7/I-705 bridge, and widens I-5 to accommodate northbound and southbound HOV lanes from M Street to the vicinity of the L Street bridge.

I-5 - SR 16 Realignment - HOV Structure and Connections

Description: This project is the final of a three stage effort to rebuild the Nalley Valley interchange. During the final phase, crews will build ramps that create new HOV lanes between I-5 and SR 16. The project will also realign I-5 to accommodate HOV ramps.

I-5 - Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road - Northbound HOV

Description: This project builds new HOV lanes on I-5 in Tacoma and Fife, and a new northbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge.

Work Schedule: The southbound I-5 exit to I-705 and SR 7 will be reduced to a single lane for approximately 10 working days beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20. Drivers can expect increased congestion and delays during the lane closure while crews rebuild the shoulder.

• Southbound I-5 exits to westbound State Route 16 and 38th Street will close from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. for striping. Drivers will be detoured using South 56th Street and northbound I-5.

Drivers can expect weeknight single-lane closures and traffic shifts into the center turn lane through the pavement preservation project. From 8 p.m. each weeknight to 6 a.m. the following day, drivers should expect single-lane closures.

SR 410 - White River Bridge to SR 164 - Paving & ADA Compliance

Work Schedule:

  • Paving will take place nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., except Fridays. The work requires lane closures with alternating traffic guided by pilot cars. Drivers should expect minor delays.
  • Crews will close one lane of SR 410 in Enumclaw from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays for intersection improvements. They will realign the intersection of SR 410 and Cole Street to increase visibility and improve curb ramps at SR 410 and Garrett Street.

Description: Pump maintenance. Drivers heading to Tillicum from northbound I-5 at Berkeley Street (Exit 122) will need to plan an alternate route. Crews will close the left lane of the northbound I-5 exit to Berkeley Street. The closure is necessary so crews can safely install a repaired storm water pump.
Drivers will be able to turn right onto Jackson Avenue. However, drivers will not be able to turn left or continue forward onto northbound I-5.

I-5 - 93rd Ave SW and Koontz Rd Bridges - Special Repair

Description: Crews replaced a 93rd Avenue overpass girder.

Work Schedule:  Drivers using the 93rd Avenue overpass in Tumwater can say goodbye to a temporary detour and one-way traffic. Crews finished repairs to the damaged bridge and reopened the overpass to two-way traffic, during the morning of Wednesday, June 21. In addition, both lanes have been restored to their full width.

Crews were required to replace the girder after previous damage by a northbound over-height load. A girder is a key element that supports a highway overpass.


I-5/N of Maytown Rd to Martin Way - Paving

Description: Crews will pave northbound I-5 between Maytown and Lacey, and southbound I-5 between Tumwater and Maytown. Crews will also rebuild the northbound I-5 Pacific Avenue bridge approach slabs and repair expansion joints. The work will require two weekends of daytime and nighttime lane restrictions on northbound I-5. WSDOT will announce the dates of this high-impact work once it is scheduled.

Work Schedule: Olympia area drivers who use northbound Interstate 5 during overnight hours may want to plan extra time.  Drivers may encounter night lane closures.

Northbound I-5 lane closures
• Single-lane closures: 9 p.m.
• Double-lane closures: 10 p.m.
• Triple-lane closures: 11 p.m.

In addition, drivers may also encounter night closures for each northbound I-5 ramp between Trosper Road in Tumwater and Martin Way in Lacey. The closures will occur one at a time when crews pave near each ramp.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention - Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you - Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively - be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone. 
  • Don't use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
