US 101 - Elwha River Bridge

Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project

Description: The National Park Service & Federal Highway Administration will rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 around Lake Crescent and 4 miles of East Beach Road to address safety and long‐term maintenance issues.
Work schedule: 2018 work has resumed as scheduled below. The scope of work includes erosion control, sub-excavation, milling and paving beginning on the eastern end of Lake Crescent and working west. 

After Memorial Day 2018—Labor Day 2018
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic. Temporary signal removed.

After Labor Day 2018—Mid November 2018
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic.
• Limited 4-hour delays (9am-1pm Mondays through Thursdays only) and 6-hour overnight delays (10pm-4am Mondays through Wednesdays only) may be scheduled and will be announced in advance. Check Olympic National Park's webpage for updates
 
Mid November 2018—Mid March 2019
• No construction. Temporary traffic signals removed.

March 15-31, 2019
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic.

SR 112 - Olsen Creek in Vicinity of Vista Drive - Remove Fish Barrier

Description: Crews will remove two 6-foot diameter concrete pipes running under SR 112 near Olsen Creek and replace with a new fish passable structure/concrete girder bridge. Project web page.
Work Schedule: All work will take place during daytime hours each Monday through Saturday to allow the contractor to meet the project's deadline:

  • Beginning Tuesday, June 26, drivers can expect intermittent one-way alternating traffic with flaggers. The work will occur from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Monday through Saturday through July 7. During that time, crews will build a one-lane detour adjacent to the work site.
  • Once the one-lane detour is built, crews will continue to replace the culvert and will direct all traffic onto the detour. After July 7, drivers can expect reduced speeds, one-way alternating traffic and occasional delays of up to 15 minutes through the work zone. The detour will remain in place through late fall.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 8 - Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek - Remove Fish Barriers

Description: The eastbound lanes have been reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic as crews replace outdated culverts under SR 8 to improve fish passage for Middle and East Fork Wildcat Creek.
Work Schedule: Around the clock traffic shift through spring 2019.

US 12, US 101, SR 109, Aberdeen / Hoquiam Signals - Rebuild Signals

US 12, US 101, SR 109 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Multiple intersections (see below).

Description: Crews are building traffic signals, constructing sidewalks, ramps and widening the roadways in multiple locations in Aberdeen and Hoquiam. The project will be completed by fall 2018.
Work schedule: Daytime lane closures. Pedestrians will be detoured to avoid construction zones. Little to no impact to travelers and local businesses. Crews will work in multiple locations:

  • Emerson Avenue and Simpson Avenue
  • West Wishkah Street and Alder Street
  • Alder Street and Market Street
  • Alder Street and 1st Street
  • Park Street and Market Street
  • Heron Street and Park Street
  • East Heron Street and F Street.

US 12 - Unnamed Tributary to Wynoochee River - Remove Fish Barrier

Description: Crews will replace a culvert under US 12 and install a 220-foot long concrete box that will open up potential habitat for approximately two miles just west of Devonshire Road near Montesano. WSDOT blog post.
Work Schedule: Beginning Monday, July 9, crews will reduce US 12 to regular shoulder and lane closures in preparation for a summer-long traffic shift later in the month. The temporary traffic shift will begin Monday, July 23, and continue around the clock through fall.

The temporary traffic shift will consist of crews temporarily reducing the highway from four lanes to two and lower the speed limit from 60 mph to 25 mph through the construction zone.

US 12/S of Sargent Blvd to Wynoochee River - Paving & Bridge Deck Repair

Description: Asphalt paving project to renew seven miles of US 12 from Aberdeen through Central Park. Crews will also make repairs to the driving surface of the Wynoochee River Bridge. This work kicks off one of two construction projects on US 12 this summer.
Work Schedule: Beginning Tuesday, June 19, crews will reduce US 12 to a single lane of alternating traffic for repairs to the Wynoochee River Bridge deck.

  • Drivers will encounter overnight, single lane closures each Monday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Work is expected to complete by the end of June and is weather dependent.

US 101/N of Jct 109 to N of Ocean Beach Rd - Chip Seal

Description: This three mile pavement preservation project along US 101 begins with bridge deck repairs over the US 101 Bernard Creek Bridge south of Ocean Beach Road, followed by lane closures between US 101 and SR 109 to Ocean Beach road.
Work Schedule: Summer through early fall 2018 construction. Drivers will encounter weekday daytime construction with one-way alternating traffic through the work zone.

  • Beginning Thursday, June 28, motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures each weekday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through late summer as crews focus on paving the majority of the highway. No work will occur July 3 through July 5.

Description: A private contractor will completely close the eastbound deceleration lane from US 12 to Bobby Johnson Lane for fuel island replacement. Travelers are advised to use alternate routes to reach their destinations.
Work Schedule: The deceleration lane will be closed around-the-clock from June 11 to June 25. Construction will occur weekdays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning June 11 through June 25.

Description: Weather permitting, Grays Harbor County Public Works will make pavement repairs on local roads from Anderson Rd to Merry Rd in Oakville leading up to US 12.

SR 20 - W of 4 Corners Rd to E of Water St - Paving and ADA Compliance

Description: This 6 mile paving project in Port Townsend will work from the ferry terminal to the southern end of the project west at 4 Corners Road by enhancing ride quality and installing 13 new ADA accessible ramps, which improves access for pedestrians and people with disabilities. Drivers traveling to Whidbey Island are encouraged to familiarize with the Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry schedule and plan ahead.
Work Schedule: Overnight single lane closures each Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and occasional daytime delays as crews build ADA accessible ramps. Summer through early-fall construction.

Description: This project rebuilds Pacific Avenue and McKinley Way bridges spanning I-5. It builds a new northbound SR 7/I-705 bridge, and widens I-5 to accommodate northbound and southbound HOV lanes from M Street to the vicinity of the L Street bridge.

I-5 - SR 16 Realignment - HOV Structure and Connections

Description: This project is the final of a three stage effort to rebuild the Nalley Valley interchange. During the final phase, crews will build ramps that create new HOV lanes between I-5 and SR 16. The project will also realign I-5 to accommodate HOV ramps.

Friday, June 22

  • Lane closures on northbound I-5 will begin at 11 p.m. Friday.
  • Northbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday, June 23. That lane will exit to I-705 to SR 509 to Portland Avenue (or Port of Tacoma Road) and back to northbound I-5. This closure is in place for girder setting.
  • Southbound I-5 exit #135 to SR 167 and Portland Avenue will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday for paving.
  • East 27th Street between Portland Avenue and Bay Street will close from 11 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23.
  • The intersection of East 26th Street and East Bay Street will close from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday, June 23.

Saturday, June 23

  • Northbound SR 7 ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday.
  • Southbound I-705 ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

From 8 p.m. Saturday, June 23 to 4 a.m. Monday, June 25, the following closures will be in place:

Monday, June 25

  • Lane closures on northbound I-5 will begin at 10 p.m. Monday.
  • Northbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday, June 26. That lane will exit to I-705 to SR 509 to Portland Avenue (or Port of Tacoma Road) and back to northbound I-5. This closure is in place for girder setting.
  • Southbound I-705 ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Northbound SR 7 ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Wednesday, June 27

  • Southbound I-5 exit #132A to South 38th Street will close from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday.

Local road closures

  • 20th Street East between PraxAir and Pacific Highway in Fife will close each night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each following day Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22.
  • Weather permitting - South Tacoma Way between South Sprague Street and Wilkeson Street will close from 11 p.m. Friday, June 29, to 7 a.m. Saturday, June 30 for a concrete pour on the new SR 16 HOV overpass.

Additional lane closures are planned each night for northbound and southbound I-5 between South 48th Street and the Puyallup River, and on eastbound and westbound SR 16 near South Tyler Street. Signed detours will be in place.


I-5 Mounts Rd to Center Dr - Auxiliary Lane Extension

Description: Crews will build a new auxiliary lane on northbound I-5 between Mounts Road and Center Drive.

  • Final striping was installed on northbound I-5 the week of June 4. 
  • As early as the week of June 11, crews will stripe southbound I-5 to its final configuration of four lanes from the Center Drive overpass, with the lanes tapering to three near Mounts Road. This work requires a series of overnight lane and ramp closures on southbound I-5. 
  • Crews will begin their work near the Mounts Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 and continue their way north towards the Center Drive overpass. Each night will involve a different section of southbound I-5 and associated ramps.
  • All work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled. Closed ramps will have signed detours. Emergency services will be able to pass through the ramp closures.

I-5 Mounts Road Rail Bridge Repair

Description: Sound Transit will be testing a Sounder train on the section of tracks adjacent to I-5 between the Tacoma Dome and Nisqually. This activity is part of the ongoing implementation of positive train control (PTC) systems.
Work Schedule: Be aware that even during normal operations, passenger and freight trains may be operating on the corridor at any time of the day or night, and at speeds up to 79 mph. Please remain clear of the tracks at all times. Signals should be obeyed at all train crossings.

SR 16, Union Ave to Jackson Ave. - ADA Ramps

2018 Pierce County Chip Seal

Description: Contractor crews will chip seal sections of SR 7 and SR 702 this summer. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph in the work zones. Drivers will see alternating one-way traffic with a pilot car or flaggers.
Workzones:
• SR 702 from milepost 0.3 to 9.3 between SR 507 and SR 7.
• SR 7 from milepost 25.5 to 27.76 south of Eatonville and again from milepost 29 to 36 at SR 702. 
Work Schedule: Chip seal work will start as early as the week of July 9. All work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled.

SR 167, Milwaukee Ave to S of Pierce Co Line – Paving

Description: Contractor crews are repairing bridge joints and repaving southbound SR 167 and its associated ramps. Drivers can expect overnight lane and ramp closures during the project. Extra law enforcement will be on site for increased speed limit enforcement.

Pierce Transit SR 512 Park & Ride Construction

Joint Base Lewis-McChord - Lewis Main, Liberty Gate Construction

Description: Joint Base Lewis-McChord Main Gate, also know as the Liberty Gate, located off of I-5 at exit #120, will be under construction from June 1-Sept. 30. During construction, inbound traffic will be limited to two lanes and there will be no outbound traffic.

  • Commuters who usually use the Lewis Main Liberty Gate to enter the base are encouraged to use a different gate during the construction period.
  • JBLM commuters and visitors departing Lewis Main will need to select an alternate gate to depart the installation during the construction.
  • Visitors can still get a pass at the JBLM Lewis Main Visitor Center during the construction project; however, parking and access will be limited. Visitors can get a pass at the JBLM McChord Field Main Gate Visitors Center off of Interstate-5 exit 125 and then take the Unity Bridge to Lewis Main.


City of Tacoma Puyallup River Bridge Replacement

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention - Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you - Most work zone accidents involve someone
  •  running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively - be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone. 
  • Don't use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
