CONSTRUCTION

US 101 Shore Road to Kitchen-Dick Road
Jerry Moore, 360-565-0622
TIME/DAYS: See information below:
DESCRIPTION: This project widened US 101 from two lanes to four in Clallam County from Shore Road to Kitchen-Dick Road.
LOCATION: Both directions from mileposts 265 to 261.
EXPECT: The US 101 speed limit on a 3.5-mile segment between Port Angeles and Sequim has been returned to 55 mph.

Crews had reduced the speed limit to 45 mph during construction of the US 101 – Shore Rd. to Kitchen-Dick Rd. widening project. The work zone speed limit reduction was enacted as a safety precaution for both drivers and crews.

The speed limit adjustment follows the successful opening of two new westbound US 101 lanes through the project limits on Nov. 8.

Although the two new US 101 lanes are now open to traffic, the project is not yet complete. The remaining work, including final paving of the new lanes, will occur after warmer and drier weather returns in 2015.

Left-turn feature
With the opening of the two new lanes, drivers will also notice a change in the way they access adjacent streets from US 101. This safety feature, called an “indirect left turn,” uses small loop roads that allow drivers to make U-turns instead of turning left directly on or off the highway. The indirect left turns reduce the potential for intersection collisions, especially “T-bone” and rear-end crashes.

The indirect left turns are located at four US 101 intersections: Shore, Barr, Dryke/Pierson and Kitchen-Dick roads. Although uncommon features, indirect left turns are not new to drivers on US 101. In 1979, WSDOT built two indirect left turns between Deer Park Road and Bagley Creek Road east of Port Angeles.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

Pay attention - driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.

Leave room between you and the car ahead of you - most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively - be aware of what is happening around you.

Merge into the proper lane before you reach the work zone.
Don't use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.

If possible, avoid work zones by using alternate routes.
