CONSTRUCTION

US 101 - Hoquiam River - Simpson Avenue Bridge - Bridge Painting
Ricky Bhalla, 360-538-8500
TIME/DAYS: See schedule below.
DESCRIPTION: This project cleans and repaints the Simpson Avenue Bridge.
LOCATION: Southbound US 101 at milepost 87.9.
EXPECT:  Drivers in Hoquiam will use a detour during a total closure of the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge.

The closure begins at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, and will be in place around the clock through mid-October. Although the bridge will be closed to vehicles, marine vessels will still be able to pass under the bridge.

During the closure, drivers will follow a signed detour via the nearby Riverside Avenue Bridge, which will be reconfigured to accommodate two-way traffic. Local businesses will remain accessible.

This bridge closure will provide contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation the space they need to work safely and accelerate the bridge-painting schedule. Crews will remove the old paint before applying a fresh coat, which will extend the life of the bridge by reducing rust and corrosion on its steel truss. The bridge was last painted in 1992.

A portion of the work is weather dependent. Heavy rain, strong winds and cold temperatures could delay the reopening.

Traffic delays
Drivers traveling to or from the coast via US 101 can expect congestion, especially on Friday and Sunday afternoons and evenings, during the closure.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention - Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you - Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively - be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge into the proper lane before you reach the work zone-
  • Don't use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
