Project Facts
The project converted 13.37 miles of chip sealed (Bituminous Surface Treated) roadway to stronger, HMA (Hot Mix Asphalt) pavement.
The project addressed hazardous areas along the roadway which have contributed to accidents.
Drainage and other improvements will reduce maintenance costs.

Project Status

Project was complete September 29, 2005.

This Preservation Project paved 13 miles of US 97.

Why did WSDOT pave this section of US 97?
The project improved the ride on the highway, increased safety  and strengthened the road surface to handle heavier traffic. The previous BST - Bituminous Surface Treatment or "Chip Seal" - roadway was converted to a stronger HMA - Hot Mix Asphalt - pavement over the existing roadbed.

The End Result
The HMA pavement conversion improves the traffic-load carrying capacity of the highway and reduces future maintenance repair costs.

Project Benefits

  • A better ride.
  • Reduced maintenance costs.
  • A safer driving environment.

What was the project timeline?
Construction began June 6th and was complete on September 29th, 2005.

Public Involvement

Environmental Protection
All applicable environmental laws and guidelines were followed. The existing drainage system was retrofitted and improved so that highway runoff is transported in a more controlled manner. All areas of disturbed roadside have been restored.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is a priority
WSDOT followed the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) to update and improve existing roadway delineation features as this project was designed.

During construction, a traffic control strategy including a variety of traffic control devices, signing, and flagging personnel was implemented for the safety of the traveling public and construction site personnel.

Did this project impact tribal resources?
No impacts were identified or were encountered during construction.

WSDOT addresses the concerns of Tribal Nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of the National Historical Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
