Project Facts
- Construction began March 13th and was completed April 28th, avoiding the Memorial Day traffic.
- Temporary stoplights controlled traffic during construction.
- Trucks over 10' wide were required to use alternate routes, during the work.
Project was completed April 28th, 2006
This Structure Preservation Program Project rehabilitated the deteriorating bridge deck on the US 97 bridge a mile south of Omak in Okanogan County.
Why is WSDOT
rehabilitate this bridge deck?
The 276 foot bridge was constructed in 1964. This deck was ranked # 7 in the 2003-2005 statewide bridge deck rehabilitation priority array. Approx. 6% of the deck was experiencing deterioration in the form of cracking and spalling concrete, and exposed rebar. The deterioration was growing. A deck overlay accomplished what just patching could not, preserving the life of the structure.
The End Result
The deck repair removed a half-inch or more of deteriorating concrete and added a new, smooth, 1-1/2" deep concrete overlay. It also replaced expansion joints to provide a smoother, safer ride.
Project Benefits
- Preserves and extends bridge life minimizing repair costs
- Reduces ongoing repairs and avoids future deck replacement
- Replaced current cracked, patched, spalling surface with new smooth surface
- Provides additional cover over reinforcing steel to decrease surface cracking
- Improves structural integrity

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Besides the safety benefits of the project itself, safety for the public and the construction workers was paramount while the work was underway. A comprehensive traffic control plan and a work zone safety plan was prepared to protect travelers and workers. Two-way one lane traffic was controlled by temporary signals during construction.
Will this project impact tribal resources?
The Colville Tribe confirmed they did not require a cultural resources survey on December 9th as no impacts had been identified. WSDOT addresses the concerns of tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
Financial Information
Two bids were opened on December 15th, 2005. On December 19th, contract # 7069 was awarded to Concrete Barrier, Inc. of Mukilteo for $416,134.00, 10% under the engineering estimate. This project was combined with the SR 283 Winchester Wasteway Bridge Deck Rehabilitation project and the contract covers both.
