SR 262 - Potholes Reservoir - Shoulder Widening for Pedestrians - Complete April 2007

Project Facts
  • This was stage 1 of 2  to address the pedestrian risk in this area.
  • It widened a mile and a half of shoulder from the Potholes State Park to Mardon Resort.
  • Work Began March 19th and was finished on April 13th, on time and on budget.

This safety improvement project widens a mile and a half of roadway shoulder on the north side of SR 262 from the Potholes State Park to Mardon Resort.

Why is WSDOT widen the shoulder on the north side of SR 262 along the Potholes Reservoir?
This area was identified as a pedestrian risk location due to high number of users during the summer months.  To proactively prevent accidents, we provided this paved area for pedestrians. 

The End Result
A safe and efficient facility providing separation of pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic.

What is the project timeline?
This is stage 1 of 2.
The project was advertised for private contractor bids on December 11th, 2006. Five qualified bids were opened on January 18th, 2007. Hurst Construction LLC of East Wenatchee, was awarded contract #7249 for $222,602, 25% below the engineering estimate.  Work began March 19th andwas complete on April 13th, 2007.  (Some seeding will be done this fall.)
Stage 2 will widen the south shoulder when funding is available.

Environmental Protection
 There were no identified impacts from this project that will adversely affect the environment.  All environmental laws and guidelines will be followed.
The followings are the permits and/or project documentation required:

  • BA - Biological Assessment.
  • NEPA (CE) - National Environmental Policy Act of 1969.
  • SEPA (CE) - State Environmental Policy Act of 1971.
  • Temporary Erosion Control Plan. 
  • Section 106 - Tribal Consultation.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
In addition to the safety benefits of the project itself, a traffic control plan to protect motorists during construction and a work zone safety plan for the crews on the site was implemented as part of the contract plans.  There were no reported accidents or injuries.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
No cultural or archeological impacts were identified.  WSDOT seeks to address the concerns of tribal nations using the process outlined in section 106 of The National Historical Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
