Lewis and Clark Bridge 433/1 Deck Replacement

Project Description
Replace the existing bridge deck of the Lewis and Clark Bridge, Number 433/1. Construction of the deck replacement stage of this project began in January, 2003. Half of the funding for this project is contributed by Oregon Department of Transportation. This project is constructed simultaneously with the navigational light system project, the seismic retrofit project, and the interim painting project.

Recent Progress
Deck replacement panels (103) have been completely installed on the bridge, constituting 3882 feet of new roadway deck. The Washington approach widening (1500 feet) was completed on the west side of the bridge and demolition has begun on the east side. During the second of four full weekend bridge closures, the Oregon end of the bridge was jacked up 15" and a precast approach slab was installed to reduce the existing dip at the end of the bridge.

Design Construction Impacts
To date, an additional $5.3 million has been requested for additional work to the stringer-to-floorbeam connections that was not anticipated prior to construction.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Silt fences capture sediments from runoff to avoid impacts to the river, as outlined in the Temporary Erosion and Sediment Control Plan. The contractor is implementing a containment plan to ensure lead from deck removal is not released into the environment. A Peregrine Falcon Management Plan is again helping to avoid potential, adverse impacts from construction during the nesting activity.

Impacts to Traffic
The Puget Island Ferry was not in operation during full nighttime bridge closures from February 9-26 due to damage caused by hitting some old pilings in the river. A passenger-only ferry substituted for 30 minutes of the closure period during eight of the 12 closures affected. The passenger service helped shift workers at Georgia Pacific get to and from work on time.
