I-405 New 2005 Funded Projects

Accelerated Nickel Projects ($485M funded July 2003)

Kirkland Stage 1 & 2 Nickel Project
The Kirkland Nickel project is being designed and cleared environmentally for the following improvements:  one additional northbound lane from 70th Ave to 124th Ave and one additional southbound lane from the SR 522 interchange to the SR 520 interchange.  Construction will occur in 2 stages.  Stage 1 provides one additional lane in both southbound and northbound directions from NE 85th to NE 124th.  Stage 2 provides one additional northbound lane from NE 70th to NE 85th and one additional southbound lane from SR 522 to NE 124th and from NE 85th to SR 520.  Stage 1 construction will begin early 2006 and Stage 2 construction under the accelerated nickel is scheduled for mid-2007.  Total project funding is $163.7 million.

Renton / Tukwila Nickel Project
The Renton Nickel project will add one northbound auxiliary lane between the SR 181 on connection and the SR 167 off connection.  It also will add a southbound auxiliary lane between the SR 169 on connection and the SR 167 off connection.  The SR 167 southbound HOV lane will be extended north to I-405.  This project is scheduled to go to construction mid-2007 under the previous nickel project schedule as well as the accelerated nickel schedule.  Total project funding is $135.8 million.

Bellevue Nickel Project
The Bellevue Nickel project will add one additional northbound lane from I-90 to SE 8th Street and one additional southbound lane from SE 8th Street to I-90 assuming a new southbound structure under the BNSF Railroad to the east of the current southbound Wilburton Tunnel.  This project is scheduled to go to construction in early 2007 under the accelerated nickel schedule.  Total project funding is $185.5 million.

Transportation Partnership Account Projects ($972M funded July 2005)

The latest transportation funding package approved by the Washington State Legislature addresses congestion chokepoints in key locations along the I-405 corridor.  These projects complement those funded in the Nickel Program to provide an improved multimodal highway system that focuses on regional mobility, congestion relief, and safety. I-5 TO SR 181 NB / SB Auxiliary Lane ($30M)
This project will reduce congestion in Tukwila in the vicinity of the I-5 interchange.  This project adds one lane northbound and southbound to I-405 between SR 181 and I-5 Interchanges.

SR 167 to SR 169 NB Auxiliary Lane ($20M)
The project will reduce congestion and improves efficiency of SR 167 Interchange in Renton.  This project adds a northbound lane on I-405 beginning at the SR 167 Interchange and extending to the SR 169 Interchange.

SR 515 Interchange ($110M)
This project will reduce congestion and improve efficiency of the I-405/SR 167 Interchange by adding a new half diamond interchange to I-405 at SR 515 (Talbot Road).

SR 167 – I-405 to SE 180th SB Auxiliary Lane ($50M)
This project will reduce congestion southbound on SR 167 from the Interchange with I-405 in Renton.  This project adds a southbound lane to SR 167 beginning at I-405 and extending to the interchange at SW 41st Street.

NE 44th to 112th ($150M)
This project is the state's match to potential Regional funding, which is required to complete the overall project.  Ultimately the SR 169 to I-90 project will include construction of two additional general purpose lanes in each direction and transit improvements including park and ride expansion and HOV direct access ramps.  This section of I-405 is a major choke point on I-405 due to the existing roadway being one lane narrower than I-405 north of I-90.

112th Ave to I-90 ($20M)
The first step to relieve northbound congestion from Renton to Bellevue will be to add a northbound lane from 112th Ave SE to I-90; linking to the new lane added by the Bellevue Nickel Improvement Project.  The project also adds an HOV bypass and ramp meter at 112th Ave SE.  Ramp meters relieve congestion by metering the "bunching" of cars trying to merge onto I-405.

NE 8th to SR 520 NB Lane ($250M)
This project will fix the weave congestion between NB I-405 traffic exiting to SR 520 and entering from NE 8th.  The project will also eliminate the weave congestion between I-405 traffic entering SR 520 and traffic exiting to 124th Ave.  Vertical clearance at the NE 12th Street crossing will be improved.

NE 10th Freeway Crossing ($67)
This improvement enhances access to the north end of downtown Bellevue as well as draws traffic from the NE 8th Street Interchange by constructing a structure at NE 10th.

NE 124th to SR 522 ($170)
This project reduces congestion between NE 124th and SR 522 by adding a NB lane from the vicinity of NE 124th to vicinity of NE 160th Street.  It reduces the weave north of NE 160th Street.

 NE 132nd Avenue ($60M)
Access is added to northbound I-405 from NE 132nd Street as well as to NE 132nd Street from southbound I-405.  This project provides an additional access point to and from I-405 north of NE132nd Street.

195th to SR 527 NB Auxiliary Lane ($45M)
This project will widen northbound I-405 to provide an auxiliary (add/drop) lane between the northbound NE 195th Street vicinity and SR 527 off-ramp vicinity.
