Project Title & Location
I-405/SR 520 to I-5 Widening (Nickel and TPA)
|
Project Description
Combines the Kirkland Nickel Stage 2 with TPA projects: Stage 2 adds 1 northbound lane from NE 70th to 85th, and 1 additional southbound lane from SR 522 to NE 124th and from 85th to the SR 520 area. TPA projects add a northbound lane from NE 124th to SR 522 and from NE 195th St. to SR 527. Also constructs new NE 132nd St. NB and SB I-405 bridges.

Recent Progress
The I-405/SR 520 to I-5 Widening project combines the Kirkland Nickel Stage 2 project with the Transportation Partnership Account (TPA) projects to create a continuous additional northbound and southbound lane between SR 520 and SR 522. These bundled projects will be designed to incorporate High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes from SR 520 to I-5 in Lynnwood, should they be implemented on this portion of I-405. The project continues to evaluate HOT lanes as requested by the Legislature in 2005. Environmental documentation continues on two alternatives, including a 2-lane HOT system between SR 520 and SR 522 as well as the conversion of the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes to HOT lanes from SR 522 to I-5. The second alternative being studied would operate the additional lane added as a general-purpose lane. Also, note that reported project costs are based on the Legislature's Final 2006 Transportation Supplemental Budget.

Design Construction Impacts
This widening project includes replacing the northbound and southbound bridges on I-405 at NE 132nd St. and close coordination with the adjacent Sound Transit I-405 Totem Lake Freeway Station/128th St. direct access project.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
A corridor wide Record of Decision for the programmatic Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) was received in October 2002. The bundled project environmental documentation began in July 2006. Public and agency scoping meeting occurred September 14, 2006.
