I-405 - SR 520 to I-5 Widening Project

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2005

Project Title & Location

I-405/SR 520 to SR 522 (Nickel)

Project Description
Combines the Kirkland Nickel Stage 2 with TPA projects: Stage 2 adds 1 northbound lane from NE 70th to 85th, and 1 additional southbound lane from SR 522 to NE 124th and from 85th to the SR 520 area. TPA projects add a northbound lane from NE 124th to SR 522 and from NE 195th St. to SR 527. Also constructs new NE 132nd St. NB and SB I-405 bridges.

Contractor/Consultant
HNTB Corporation is the lead consultant of the General Engineering Consultant Team.

Recent Progress

The I-405 Kirkland Nickel project is now one year ahead of schedule.  This congestion relief project addresses the "Kirkland Crawl."  The request for proposals for Stage 1 design-build was issued in July, and bids were received in August.  After evaluation, this design-build contract was awarded on September 26, 2005.  Project mobilization began almost immediately, with the State and contractor construction teams co-located in the project area.  With co-location, agreements and other mobilization efforts complete,  Stage 1 remains ahead of schedule.  Simultaneously, Stage 2 preliminary engineering remains on schedule.  The close coordination efforts of the Multi-Agency Permitting Team and local jurisdictions allowed all Stage 1 permit approvals to be received in time to meet this schedule and results in the project opening to traffic in December 2007, one year early.

Design Construction Impacts

This is a widening project that will be constructed in two stages.  Stage 1 provides one additional lane in both the northbound and southbound directions from NE 85th to NE 124th.  Stage 2 provides one additional northbound lane from NE 70th to NE 85th and one additional southbound lane from SR 522 to NE 124th and from NE 85th to SR 520.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance

The Services concurred with the Biological Assessment at the end of October 2004.  Environmental Assessment was signed February 23, 2005 and public comment period ended March 23, 2005. Finding of No Significant Impacts was obtained April 14th, ahead of schedule.  Final permits received in early July 2005.

Impacts to Traffic

Pavement widened to the outside of the existing roadways, so impacts to the traveling public expected be minimized during construction.  Close coordination continues with the adjacent Sound Transit direct access project:  I -405 Totem Lake Freeway Station/NE 128th.
