I-405 - NE 124th St. to SR 522

Map of NE 124th St to SR 522 project segment
The NE 124th Street to SR 522 project element extends from NE 124th Street in Kirkland to SR 522 in Bothell.

Overview
WSDOT will build a northbound lane on I-405 from NE 124th Street to SR 522 and eliminate weaving traffic between northbound on ramp traffic from NE 160th Street and off-ramp traffic to SR 522.

Why is WSDOT building this new lane?
There is a significant amount of northbound traffic congestion approaching NE 160th Street and SR 522 in the afternoon commute as I-405 motorists weave to exit to SR 522 and as NE 160th motorists enter I-405. Grade separating this conflict point will reduce accidents and help traffic flow. In addition, this project will add capacity between NE 124th Street to SR 522, a major traffic destination.

The End Result
The completion of this project adds additional traffic capacity on northbound I-405 and reduces traffic weaves between NE 160th Street and SR 522.

Project Benefits

  • Safety. The addition of a grade separation from NE 160th Street and SR 522 traffic reduces accidents as traffic will no longer have to weave with each other. The increase in northbound capacity between NE 124th and SR 522 also reduces congestion and congestion-related accidents.
  • Congestion relief. Reduces congestion by increasing general purpose capacity by one-third and by reducing weaving movements between 160th and SR 522.
  • Environment. WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the project to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
The addition of the new lane will reduce the number of congestion-related accidents as well as eliminate the weaving northbound between NE 160th St. and SR 522. Congestion-related accidents – rear-end and side-swipe crashes – make up the largest percentage of accidents on I-405.
