I-405 - Northbound 195th St. to SR 527

Map of northbound 195th to SR 527 project segment
The project element limits are from NE 195th Street to SR 527 in Bothell.

Overview
WSDOT will build a new northbound lane on I-405 between NE 195th Street and SR 527.

Why is WSDOT building this new lane?
Afternoon congestion in this area is heavy due to commuters heading north from the Bellevue and Kirkland areas in the south, as well as from commuters leaving and entering the University of Washington Bothell campus and business parks at NE 195th Street. The new lane will increase capacity in the general purpose lanes by 50 percent.

The End Result
Commuters will have a new lane to help reduce congestion on I-405 heading north in the afternoon. The completed NE 195th Street to SR 527 project will improve the northbound evening driving speed by 15 to 20 mph.

Project Benefits

  • Safety. The increase in capacity will reduce congestion-related accidents through the Bothell area.
  • Congestion relief. The addition of a northbound lane between NE 195th Street and SR 527 increases capacity in the general purpose lanes by 50 percent. The increase in capacity will help reduce congestion by allowing through traffic to stay out of the way of exiting traffic.
  • Environment.  WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the project to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.

Financial Information
2005 Gas Tax (Partnership Funding) - $40 million as part of the $337 million provided for the entire SR 520 to I-5 Widening Project.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities

The addition of the new lane will reduce the number of congestion-related accidents on northbound I-405 approaching NE 195th Street and continuing to SR 527 in Bothell. Congestion-related accidents – rear-end and side-swipe crashes – make up the largest percentage of accidents on I-405.
