| The project element limits for Kirkland Nickel Stage 2 are from NE 70th St to NE 85th St in Kirkland and from NE 124th St to SR 522. |
Overview
WSDOT will build a north and southbound lane between NE 70th Street and NE 85th Street in Kirkland and a southbound lane between SR 522 and NE 124th Street.
Why is WSDOT building this new lane?
The Kirkland Nickel Project is being built to improve personal and freight mobility and reduce foreseeable traffic congestion in a manner that is safe and reliable. It is one of three "nickel" projects that constitute the first step toward completing the I-405 Corridor Program.
The End Result
Commuters will have added capacity to travel from Bothell to Kirkland during the morning commute, when congestion is heaviest.
Project Benefits
- Safety. The increase in capacity will reduce congestion-related accidents through the Kirkland area.
- Congestion relief. The addition of the southbound lane between SR 522 and NE 124th Street increases capacity in the general purpose lanes by one-third. The increase in capacity will help reduce congestion by allowing through traffic to stay to the left.
- Environment. WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the project to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.
