I-405, Kirkland Nickel Stage 1 Project -- July 2006

Girder setting on NE 116th Street Bridge
Over a four-night period in late July, crews set 12 concrete girders for the new bridge at NE 116th Street. By early fall, vehicles will be traveling on the new section of the bridge. The remaining portion of the old bridge will then be demolished.

Widening on I-405
With almost all of the grading work completed by late July, crews will begin paving the new lanes on I-405. By early fall, four general purpose lanes and one HOV lane will be open for travel between NE 85th Street and NE 116th Street.

Retaining walls near NE 116th Street
Throughout July, crews have been building new retaining walls near NE 116th Street to accommodate the widened freeway and reconfigured ramps.  The retaining walls and the new noise walls have a stone block pattern on the side that faces neighborhoods and businesses.

Tunnel Boring Machine used to drill a hole for a new culvert
Crews lowered a Tunnel Boring Machine into its pit in late July. The machine will drill a six and a half foot diameter hole for a new culvert under I-405. Once completed this fall, the new culvert, in combination with over 250 feet of constructed natural streambed, will provide new fish passage and habitat for cutthroat trout.
