Recent Progress

The I-405 Kirkland Nickel project is now one year ahead of schedule.  This congestion relief project addresses the "Kirkland Crawl".  The request for proposals for design-build was issued on July 15, 2005.  Bids were received on August 30.  These were evaluated and opened on September 21, 2005.  Right of way Certification 1 has been received.  The close coordination efforts of the Multi-Agency Permitting Team and local jurisdictions allowed all permit approvals to be received in time to meet this schedule and results in the project opening to traffic in December 2007, one year early.

Design Construction Impacts

This is a widening project that will be constructed in two stages.  Stage 1 provides one additional lane in both the northbound and southbound directions from NE 85th to NE 124th.  Stage 2 provides one additional northbound lane from NE 70th to NE 85th and one additional southbound lane from SR 522 to NE 124th and from NE 85th to SR 520.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
The Services concurred with the Biological Assessment at the end of October 2004.  The Environmental Assessment was signed February 23, 2005 with the public comment period  ending on March 23, 2005.  The Finding of No Significant Impacts was obtained April 14, ahead of schedule.  The  final permits were received in early July 2005.

Impacts to Traffic

Pavement is widened to the outside of the existing roadways so it is expected that impacts to the traveling public can be minimized during construction. Close coordination continues with the adjacent Sound Transit direct access project: I 405 Totem Lake Freeway Station/ NE 128th.
