Recent Progress

Engineering for the Nickel project is 95% complete and is currently in internal review.  Request for Contractor Qualifications went out Oct. 15th 2004 with Contractor Statement of Qualification due December 15th.  The Draft Request for Proposal (RFP) is scheduled to be completed in early 2005.  We expect to give the Draft RFP to the contractor at this time for information only.  Right-of-way needs have been assessed and the first two parcels purchased November 2004.  The remaining parcel should be purchased by early 2005.

Design Construction Impacts

This is a widening project that will be constructed in two stages.  Stage 1 provides one additional lane in both the northbound and southbound directions from NE 85th to NE 124th.  Stage 2 provides one additional northbound lane from NE 70th to NE 85th and one additional southbound lane from SR 522 to NE 124th and from NE 85th to SR 520.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Completed all 21 discipline reports for internal review.  Multi-Agency permitting Team (MAPT) coordination continues to go well.  All permit applications were submitted November 17th 2004.  The Services concurred with the Biological Assessment at the end of October 2004.  The Environmental Assessment is expected to be issued for public comments in early 2005 with a mid 2005 Finding of No Significant Impacts date.

Impacts to Traffic

Pavement is widened to the outside of the existing roadways so it is expected that Impacts to the traveling public can be minimized during construction. Close coordination continues with the adjacent Sound Transit direct access project: I 405 Totem Lake Freeway Station/ NE 128th.
