Project limits of the SR 167 to SR 169 project element extend from SR 167 interchange to SR 169 in Renton.
Overview
WSDOT will build one additional lane northbound on I-405 to improve traffic flow between the SR 167 and the SR 169 interchanges as part of the larger I-5 to SR 169 Widening Project. Safety will improve by eliminating the weaving traffic which currently merges together when entering and exiting I-405.
Why is WSDOT constructing this new lane?
High volumes of commuters travel through this area. The I-405 / SR 167 interchange is one of the most congested interchanges in the state. This project is a first step to address the congestion at the I-405 / SR 167 interchange.
This new project is part of a broad long-range plan approved in 2002 by the cities and counties along the corridor, the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Authority, Sound Transit, King County Metro and WSDOT. This vision includes four new freeway lanes, bus rapid transit and other improved transit services, additional HOV direct-access points, vanpools, carpool lanes and more park-and-ride spaces.
The End Result
From SR 167 to SR 169, this project element increases the northbound I-405 general purpose capacity by 50 percent with the creation of a northbound auxiliary lane. The increase in capacity will reduce traffic congestion on I-405 and SR-167.
Project Benefits
- Safety. The new lane allows travelers more time to enter and exit the freeway, reducing weaving traffic and improves safety by reducing congestion-related accidents.
- Congestion relief. Congestion in the vicinity of the SR 167 interchange, one of the most congested interchanges in the state, is reduced by increasing the northbound I-405 general purpose capacity by 50 percent
- Environment. WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the entire I-5 to SR 169 Widening Project to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.
Financial Information
