This project element extends from the I-405/SR 167 interchange to SE 180th Street.
Overview
WSDOT will build an additional southbound auxiliary lane on SR 167 between the I-405 interchange and SE 180th Street as part of the larger I-5 to SR 169 Widening Project.
Why is WSDOT constructing this project? High volumes of commuters travel through this area. The I-405 / SR 167 interchange is one of the most congested interchanges in the state. This project is a first step to address the congestion at the I-405 / SR 167 interchange. This new project is part of a broad long-range plan approved in 2002 by the cities and counties along the corridor, the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Authority, Sound Transit, King County Metro and WSDOT. This vision includes four new freeway lanes, bus rapid transit and other improved transit services, additional HOV direct-access points, vanpools, carpool lanes and more park-and-ride spaces.
The End Result
This project element reduces congestion by increasing general purpose capacity 50 percent southbound on SR 167 from I-405 to the interchange at SE 180th Street. This will help reduce congestion, not only on SR 167 but also on both southbound and northbound I-405.
Project Benefits
- Safety. The increase in capacity on southbound SR 167 will help reduce congestion-related accidents.
- Congestion relief. The new southbound auxiliary lane will decrease backups on I-405 and SR 167, increasing travel speeds and improving safety.
- Environment. WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the SR 167 Southbound: I-405 to SE 180th Street project element to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.
