Recent Progress
The I-5 to SR 169 Widening project is funded by both the Nickel gas and the Transportation Partnership Account (TPA) tax revenues. The project bundles three TPA projects with the Renton Nickel project to widen northbound and southbound I-405 between I-5 and SR 169. Project also includes adding a southbound SR 167 lane between I-405 and SW 41st interchange and lengthening SR 167 southbound HOV lane north to I-405 interchange. To effectively bundle the project, the Nickel project's anticipated Open to Traffic Date was advanced six months. Bundled project design solutions are compatible with the I-405 Master Plan. I-405 design and environmental processes are on schedule, though the environmental process may be affected by the delayed ESA consultation. The 15% internal review for the Request for Proposals (RFP) is complete. The Right of Way appraisals are on schedule, with one more appraisal remaining.

Design Construction Impacts
Retaining walls will be utilized wherever necessary to minimize impacts to adjacent properties, wetlands, and drainage facilities. The Benson Structure over-crossing, including the center pier located in the I-405 median, will be replaced to accommodate the alignment of I-405 Master Plan. Widening and re-striping of southbound SR 167 will also be required.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
A corridor wide Record of Decision for the programmatic FEIS was received in October 2002. The project Environmental documentation began in January 2005. Design work is complete for an "Early Environmental Investment" mitigation bank site near Springbrook Creek in Renton.
|
Impacts to Traffic
Expect moderate construction impacts, since the majority of the work occurs on the shoulders. Several maintenance of traffic phases will be required to replace the I-405 structures at crossings over Springbrook Creek and Oakesdale Avenue.
