The I-5 to SR 181 project element extends from I-5 to SR 181 in Renton.
Overview
WSDOT will build an additional lane on I-405 in each direction between I-5 and the West Valley Highway. These new lanes will reduce congestion by increasing capacity on I-405.
Why is WSDOT constructing these new lanes?
High volumes of freight and commuters travel through this section of I-405. Providing the additional general purpose lanes allows traffic to move more freely within this currently congested section.
The End Result
This project increases the I-405 capacity both in the northbound and southbound directions. This increase in capacity reduces traffic congestion on I-405 and SR 518 and improves safety as motorists have a longer period to merge into their desired lane.
Project Benefits
- Safety. The new lane allows travelers more time to enter and exit the freeway. This reduces the need for weaving traffic and improves safety by reducing congestion-related accidents.
- Congestion relief. Reduces traffic congestion by increasing capacity on both I-405 northbound and southbound general purpose lanes by 50 percent between I-5 and SR 181.
- Environment. WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the entire I-5 to SR 169 Widening Project to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.
Financial Information
2005 Gas Tax (Partnership Funding) - $30 million as part of the $236 million for the entire I-5 to SR 169 Widening Project.
