I-405 - 112th Ave SE to I-90

Map of 112th Ave SE to I-90 project segment
The 112th Ave SE to I-90 project element extends from 112th Ave SE to I-90 in south Bellevue.

Overview
WSDOT will build a northbound lane between 112th Ave SE and I-90 as part of the larger South Bellevue Widening Project.

Why is WSDOT building these improvements?
This freeway section is the most congested in the state. The first step to relieve northbound congestion from Renton to Bellevue will be to add a northbound lane from 112th Ave SE to I-90; linking to the new lane added by the Bellevue Nickel Improvement Project. The Project also adds an HOV bypass and ramp meter at 112th Avenue SE. Ramp meters relieve congestion by metering the “bunching” of cars trying to merge onto I-405. This is the first step in completing the Renton to Bellevue Project.

When funded, the Renton-to-Bellevue project will ultimately extend approximately eight miles along I-405 between the SR 169 (Maple Valley Highway) interchange in the south to the northern on- and off-ramps of the I-90 junction in the north. The project is part of a long-range mobility strategy called the I-405 Master Plan. The I-405 Master Plan is a partnership between WSDOT, the cities and counties along the corridor, and regional and federal transportation agencies. The improvement program balances highway, transit and arterial projects, offering a range of mobility options for travelers and freight movement on the I-405 corridor.

The End Result
Morning travelers on I-405 will access Bellevue faster and more efficiently with the addition of the northbound lane from 112th Ave SE to I-90.

Project Benefits

  • Safety.  Improves safety by reducing congestion-related accidents.
  • Congestion relief.  Reduces congestion on northbound I-405 in the peak morning commute by constructing a new ramp meter for the northbound on-ramp at 112th Avenue SE and adding a new lane between 112th Avenue SE and I-90.
  • Environment. WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team is designing the 112th Ave SE to I-90 project element to avoid and minimize impacts to the environment.

Financial Information
2005 Gas Tax (Partnership Funding) - $20 million as part of the $211 million for the 112th Ave SE to SE 8th St Widening Project.

What is the project timeline?
