Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement - Electrical Line Relocation - Complete December 2009

OverviewProject area map

From September 2008 to December 2009, WSDOT and Seattle City Light removed high voltage electrical lines that were attached to the viaduct between S. Massachusetts Street and Railroad Way S. and replaced them with a new underground system. The lines had to be removed before construction to replace the viaduct's south end could begin.

Improves safety

Relocating and upgrading the transmission and distribution lines between the Massachusetts Street Substation and Railroad Way S. improves the system’s reliability and better protects downtown’s power supply in the event of an earthquake.

What other work are we doing?
The Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program includes several other projects:

  • Central waterfront viaduct replacement – This project is in the early design phase and is under environmental review.
  • South end viaduct replacement – With this project we will replace the southern mile of the viaduct. Road and bridge construction will begin in 2010.
  • Transit enhancements and other improvements – Learn about our plans for keeping people and goods moving during the south end viaduct replacement.
