North End
North End

A couple of years from now, all eyes will be fixed on the dirt near Sixth Avenue North and Harrison Street. There, the world’s largest-diameter tunnel boring machine will emerge from the soils beneath Seattle. We’re just beginning to prepare the area for the machine’s arrival, but look for activity at the site to pick up in the coming months.
Our interactive simulation shows you how this area will evolve as we continue replacing the viaduct.
North-end construction gaining steam
We're preparing to dig a pit in the work zone near Sixth Avenue North and Harrison Street, where our tunnel boring machine will end its journey in 2014. Construction activity will soon pick up in the neighborhood, affecting traffic on surface streets near the work zone. Example: Sixth Avenue North is now permanently closed between Thomas and Republican streets.
Utility relocation continues
Vital, but hardly thrilling. That pretty much sums up the utility relocation we’ve been doing near the tunnel’s future north portal for the past several months. We’re working hard to move these underground utilities out of the way of construction. This work does affect traffic and parking on some surface streets in the neighborhood, so be sure to check our list of construction closures if you’re headed to the neighborhood.
Other construction in the area
Our construction at the north end is just starting, but that doesn’t mean the north end isn’t bustling with activity. Most notably, our partners at the City of Seattle are making great progress on the Mercer Corridor Project. We’re coordinating closely with their construction, and will continue to do so as we move forward.
