Alaskan Way Viaduct & Seawall Replacement - Related Projects

City

Mercer Corridor
This project will widen Mercer Street between I-5 and Dexter Avenue North, to accommodate three lanes of travel in each direction, and will also narrow Valley Street to a two-lane, two-way street. This will improve a key alternative route to Seattle Center and surrounding neighborhoods during Alaskan Way Viaduct construction.

Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project
The goal of this project is to improve traffic safety and upgrade the structural and seismic performance of the 60-year-old viaduct that connects I-5 to the West Seattle High Level Bridge.

Regional

Sound Transit LINK Light Rail
This project includes a 13.9-mile light rail line from Westlake Station to Tukwila International Boulevard Station that will open in summer 2009, and a 1.7 mile extension to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that will open by the end of that year.

State

Ferry System - Seattle Ferry Terminal at Colman Dock
Washington State Ferries continues to work with the City of Seattle on a resolution and guidelines for future development of Colman Dock, while also coordinating with the Alaskan Way Viaduct program and other related efforts.

I-5 Construction Projects in Seattle & Shoreline
WSDOT is working on improving traffic flow and travel on this important route, which is the only major north-south alternative to SR 99. Projects between Seattle and Shoreline include building noise walls, repairing and replacing aging concrete slabs, strengthening overpasses and ramps, and adding more lanes.

I-5 Pavement Reconstruction and Bottleneck Improvement
WSDOT is planning to replace 16 miles of concrete on Interstate 5 from Tukwila through downtown Seattle to Northgate, while also looking at options to make traffic flow better. This work will be coordinated with other transportation projects in the area, including the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement, SR 520 bridge replacement, light rail, and I-405 and SR 509 improvements.

I-5 - SR 509 Corridor Completion and Freight Improvement
Extending SR 509 will ease congestion on I-5; improve service between industrial districts by allowing trucks to bypass I-5, SR 99 and local streets; and provide for southern access to Sea-Tac International Airport.

SR 519 - S Seattle Intermodal Access - Royal Brougham
WSDOT is improving connections for ferry and freight traffic to the Port of Seattle terminals and the central waterfront area. This project will separate car, freight, pedestrian, and rail traffic to help improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety and reduce the risk of collisions. Work is being coordinated with planning efforts for the Alaskan Way Viaduct to ensure that improvements to both roads are compatible.
