Project Description
The existing seismically vulnerable Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall are both at the end of their useful life and at risk of sudden and catastrophic failure in an earthquake. The cost to replace in-kind this seismically vulnerable structure is between $2.0 and $2.4 billion. (This figure does not include the cost of replacing the seawall or work north of Battery Street tunnel. Necessary to protect public safety and maintain the transportation corridor.

Recent Progress
Nickel funding begins July 1, 2003. Refinements of scope and costs for project alternatives were completed in June 2003. The selected alternatives are being utilized to complete the Environmental Impact Statement. Design Construction Impacts
The recent Cost Estimate Validation Process (CEVPTM) estimates construction durations between 6 and 11 years, depending on the alternative. Funding for construction depends upon additional funding from the Regional Transportation Investment District (RTID) as well as other new funding. Environmental assessment and documentation is underway and on schedule. Work remains within scope and budget.
