Complete June, 2012

Construction began Feb. 21, 2012 and was complete on June 29, on time and on budget.

This Preservation Program project stabilized one rock slope above US 97A, two miles north of Wenatchee, a half mile south of Rocky Reach Dam.

Why is WSDOT stabilize the slope?
This project reduces the potential for rocks to fall onto US 97A between Wenatchee and Entiat.
This slope was identified for stabilization by the WSDOT Unstable Slope Management Program (.pdf 784 kb).
The slope was evaluated, rated and analyzed for benefit vs. cost in 2008 and was funded for stabilization in the current budget. To qualify for funding, a rating of 350, a benefit/cost of 1.0 and an average daily traffic count of 5,000 is necessary. The average daily traffic count below this slope is 6,500 vehicles per day. The slope rated 405 with a b/c of 1.20.

To restore the integrity of this slope these measures were utilized:

  • Debris removal
  • Rock scaling
  • Application of shotcrete
  • Installation of rock bolts
  • Installation of steel cable netting

The End Result
Fewer falling rocks should reach the roadway, lowering the risk of injury to travelers and reducing the potential for damage to vehicles and pavement.

Project Benefits
Reduced rock fall is the primary benefit, but it also reduces maintenance costs cleaning up fallen rocks as well as avoiding costly repairs to the roadway and adjacent railroad tracks.

What is the project timeline?
Construction began February 21, 2012 and was complete June 29.
