Project Complete September 2009

This Highway Capital Preservation Program project stabilized an unstable slope above US 97 north of Blewett Pass in Chelan County.

Why is WSDOT stabilizing this slope?
Our Geotechnical Services Division performed an analysis of this slope at the request of our North Central Region Maintenance staff after a June 10, 2006 rockfall.  This is one of two adjacent areas that are being stabilized. It was identified for stabilization in the WSDOT Unstable Slope Management Program (pdf). Our technicians evaluate such factors as catchment area, frequency of slope failures (rock fall incidents), and how often the driving lanes were impeded.

The End Result
is improved safety by reducing the potential for loose rocks to fall onto the roadway.

Project Benefits
In addition to the safety benefit of reducing potential rock fall on the highway, maintenance costs, cleaning up fallen rock and repairing pavement damage, is also reduced.

What is the project timeline?
Construction began July 27, 2009 and was complete September 18, 2009.
