US 97 - Satus Creek Bridge - Bridge Replacement

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending September 2008

Project Title & Location
US 97 - Satus Creek Bridge - Bridge Replacement

Project Description
This project will replace the Satus Creek Bridge on US 97 south of Toppenish with a new, wider bridge that meets current design standards. Replacing the bridge and realigning this stretch of roadway will improve safety and reduce collisions.

Contractor/Consultant
Project not yet advertised or awarded.

Recent Progress
The project has been approved by the Yakama Nation Tribal Council. WSDOT may now progress with getting cultural and environmental approval from the Nation.  The first phase of drilling exploration has been completed to determine soil types, ground water level, and to check for possible historical artifacts.  Ground water levels are now being monitored. This information is vital to the design of the new bridge.

Design Construction Impacts
WSDOT may hire a consultant to complete the bridge design.  WSDOT is working closely with the Yakama Nation to address cultural and environmental impacts of the current alternative. The current alternative builds the new bridge parallel to and just north of the existing bridge.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Cultural and habitat impacts are likely.

Impacts to Traffic
Traffic should expect minimal impact.  The new structure will be built parallel to the old allowing us to keep the old bridge in service until the new one is finished.
