The new passing lane was built on the right shoulder of US 97 roughly halfway between Okanogan and Tonasket.

This I-3, Economic Initiatives Capital Improvement Program project is intended to improve freight mobility on this major arterial in and out of British Columbia's Okanagon Valley. This section of US 97 is also a Scenic Byway designated "Via 97", supporting the tourism industry.
Why is WSDOT
building this northbound passing lane?
This project is to improve mobility by providing a dedicated passing lane and to reduce the potential for crossover collisions.
The End Result
This project constructed a 1.35 mile passing lane two miles north of Riverside, expanding the highway to three 12-foot wide lanes with 8 foot shoulders.
- Eliminates the need to enter the Southbound lane to pass slower vehicles
- Improves freight and passenger vehicle mobility
- Reduces the potential for head on collisions
- Reduces congestion

This project was advertised for private contractor bids Dec. 17, 2012 Seven qualified bids were opened Jan. 10, 2013. On Jan. 14, contract #8409 was awarded to Selland Construction, Inc. of Wenatchee for $829,108.19, 15% under the engineering estimate.
