Recent Progress

This project will have two contracts.  The first contract, U.S. 2 Lowering, the design is approximately ten percent complete.  Ongoing work in the Project Office includes preparing retaining wall site data, continuing hydraulic design, finalizing the US 2 interchange plans for approval, investigating intersection options for the US 2/Farwell intersection, and preparing preliminary PS&E plan sheets.  Preliminary design work is underway for the second contract, U.S. 2 to Wandermere.

Design Construction Impacts

As noted in the March 2005 and June 2005 Gray Notebooks, costs for both Nickel funded projects on the North Spokane Corridor could increase at completion in 2011, due to higher than anticipated costs in Right of Way acquisition and construction materials.  The region is investigating project design changes to reduce costs and develop alternative funding proposals to address this cost increase.

Due to potentially high construction impacts to US 2 traffic, and a very high cost to replace the existing culvert carrying Peone/Deadman Creek under US 2, the Project Office has been investigating options to accommodate additional roadway fill over the culvert.  A light weight fill design with no impacts to the creek is emerging as the best option, but requires additional study before it can be approved.  The study is planned to begin during the summer of 2005.
