View entire map  This project will build a pedestrian and bike trail to connect US 97A/Euclid Avenue with the existing Apple Capitol Loop Trail.

View entire photo  This project will build a new bridge adjacent to the railroad bridge on US 2/97 to increase safety by keeping pedestrians and bicyclists away from the railroad tracks.
Project Facts
  • This project will add approximately 1600 feet of trail to the existing ACLT trail system.
  • Safety will be increased for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.
  • The new structure will facilitate bicycle commuters to Olds Station .

Project Status

Spring 2008

This project was advertised for private contractor bids on March 24th.  Bids will be opened on May 1st.  A contract will then be awarded with construction to be complete by fall.
A related project on the east end of the bridge- East Odabashian Bridge - Loop Trail Connection- will be constructed on a separate contract later this summer.
These projects make significant improvements to the safety and accessibility of the area's trail system.

Within the WSDOT Capital Mobility Improvement program, this trail is designated as an Urban Bicycle Connectivity Project.

Why is WSDOT constructing this trail connection?
There is no safe access from the Apple Capitol Loop Trail (ACLT) and the Olds Station Industrial Area or US 97A.  Bicycle commuters need access to the Olds Station port facilities and recreational users need access to US 97A to ride north to Rocky Reach Dam and Lake Chelan. Now, users must leave the trail, carry their bikes and cross 4-50 MPH traffic lanes and 2 concrete barriers on US 2/97, or cross railroad tracks and hike to US 97A to get to their destination

The End Result
This project will construct a new bridge adjacent to the railroad bridge on US 2/97 and extend the ACLT west across it and around the northbound off ramp to connect with US 97A/Euclid Avenue across from the Washington State Apple Commission Visitor Center.  This will provide a direct designated connection for bicyclists and pedestrians from the ACLT to the Port of Chelan County's Olds Station Industrial Park, the adjacent commercial district and shopping center and US 97A.

Project Benefits

  • Improves safety removing conflicts between bicyclists and pedestrians and vehicles and trains.
  • Provides a direct connection for environmentally friendly commuting to the North Wenatchee commerial and industrial areas.
  • Provides a direct trail connection for Rocky Reach Dam or Lake Chelan-bound recreational users to US 97A.

Public Involvement

Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Two public meetings have been held over the past four years to provide us with input from trail users and others about the way the connection would be used and their design ideas. If you have questions or concerns about this project please contact the Project Engineering Office listed below.

Environmental Protection
The appropriate environmental documentation will be completed to address potential environmental issues for the project. As preliminary designs are refined, environmental issues will be evaluated and appropriate mitigation developed. WSDOT is committed to protecting the environment, and makes every effort to assess and minimize negative impacts from highway improvement projects.

Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
In addition to the increased safety for bicyclists and pedestrians using the ACLT, the project will include a comprehensive traffic and work zone safety plan when construction is underway.

Will this project impact tribal resources?

Close communication with the tribal nations will continue throughout the project planning now, and as it is constructed.  WSDOT seeks to address the concerns of tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
