US 2 - Stevens Pass West - Unstable Slopes - Complete September 2014

  • Season 3 construction on the last slope began July 9 and was complete September 19
  • The project stretched over three construction seasons due to the later start and early end to work at 4,000 feet of elevation in the Cascades
  • Season 1 construction began May 9, 2012 and continued to November 1
  • Season 2 construction began May 13 to Nov. 1, 2013

This P3 Unstable Slopes Preservation Program project stabilized four different rock slopes along US 2, in a three mile section from the Stevens Pass Summit, west.

Why is WSDOT stabilizing these slopes?

This project is to reduce the potential for loose rocks to roll down onto the roadway, creating driving hazards.
Stabilization techniques recommended by WSDOT Geotechnical branch and our contract-consultants, Golder Associates, included tree and debris removal, scaling of loose rocks from the slopes, installing rock bolts, installing steel cable netting and "shotcreting" select areas.

The End Result
This project was designed to reduce the potential for rockfall hazards on the roadway.

Project Benefits

  • Reduced potential for rockfall onto US 2.
  • Reduced maintenance costs.
  • Reduced potential road closures as well.
