This pedestrian risk, safety project provides a bridge over US 2, eliminating people/car conflicts on the roadway.  The project also installed access control barrier to prevent pedestrians from walking across the roadway and a right turn lane into the ski area's west summit parking lot to improve mobility.

Why is WSDOT building a pedestrian crossing, controlling access and installing a right turn lane?
Many skiers must walk across US 2 to access the Stevens Pass Ski Area from its primary parking lot.  Hikers must cross the highway to travel the Pacific Crest Trail.  The at-grade crossing posed a hazard to pedestrians and motorists.  The new right turn lane allows skiers to safely slow and enter the parking lot, reducing the conflict with eastbound US 2 traffic.

The End Result
The crossing separates the pedestrians from the motorists creating a safer environment for skiers, forest users and motorists.  The right turn lane into the ski area parking lot reduces the likelihood of collisions in the eastbound lanes west of the summit.

Project Benefits

  • Improved passage over the highway for pedestrians
  • Improved mobility for motorists
  • Improved pedestrian recreation access

What is the project timeline?
Construction began May 3, 2010 and was substantially complete in 135 working days, by Nov. 5.
