  • We held an open house for this project on July 24 in Sultan.
  • The 2008 legislature provided $10 million for safety improvements on US 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar.

US 2 is an important cross-Cascades route and serves as a major freight route. It is also popular with tourists and recreational users. We will make several safety improvements at key locations to help reduce collisions on US 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar.

Why is WSDOT making safety improvements to US 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar?
The 2008 legislature directed WSDOT to work with the local community to develop safety improvements to reduce serious collisions on US 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar. We worked with the community to get feedback on safety problems and possible solutions. Using their input and our safety data, we developed five main improvements to enhance safety for the 15,300 drivers who use this important route each day.

The End Result
To improve safety for everyone on US 2, we will:

  • Build a new two-way left turn lane between 245th Ave SE and 153rd Place SE east of Monroe
  • Close the south leg of the intersection with Fern Bluff Road west of Sultan
  • Extend the existing two-way left turn lane in Sultan and reconfigure the intersection of 11th Street and the entrances to the park-and-pool lot
  • Close the western connection of Sultan-Startup Road to US 2 east of Sultan
  • Extend the existing two-way left turn lane in Gold Bar to Dorman Road

View aerial photos of each of the locations and learn more about their collision histories.

Project Benefits
Extending the two-way left-turn lanes in Sultan and Gold Bar and building a new two-way left-turn lane east of Monroe will reduce rear-end and t-bone collisions related to traffic turning into and out of driveways and cross streets. Two-way left-turn lanes also provide a refuge for turning drivers in heavy traffic.

Changing the intersections of Sultan-Startup Rd and Fern Bluff Road will reduce the risk of collisions involving drivers turning onto and off of US 2 from these side roads.
