US 2 - SR 92 - Roadside Safety Improvement

Project Facts
  • We will improve driver safety on US 2 and SR 92 by installing over a mile of guardrail.
  • Between 2003 and 2007, there were 130 collisions involving fixed objects on this section of US 2.
  • We awarded the contract to the most competitive bidder, Petersen Brothers, Inc. on Sept. 17, 2007.

Project Status

July 2008

  • Drivers should expect single-lane closures on weekdays throughout the summer on SR 92 near Granite Falls and on US 2 between Gold Bar and Skykomish. See the construction update for information on upcoming closures.
  • We awarded the contract for this project to the most competitive bidder, Petersen Brothers, Inc., in September 2007.

We will improve safety on US 2 and State Route 92 by installing over a mile of guardrail and removing potentially dangerous objects such as tree stumps and boulders from the side of the road.

Why is WSDOT improving roadside safety on US 2 and SR 92?
Over the past five years, approximately 45 percent of all collisions that occurred on this stretch of US 2 involved vehicles that ran off the road and collided with fixed objects such as trees or stumps. Installing guardrail and removing potentially dangerous objects in certain areas along SR 92 and US 2 will improve driver safety by reducing the risk of such collisions.

The End Result
We will reduce the risk of serious run-off-the-road collisions on US 2 and SR 92 by removing potentially dangerous objects from the side of the road and installing over a mile of guardrail.

Project Benefits
Safety: Between 2003 and 2007, there were 130 collisions involving fixed objects on this section of US 2 alone. Installing guardrail and removing potentially dangerous objects such as tree stumps and boulders will improve driver safety by reducing the risk of serious run-off-the-road collisions.

What is the project timeline?

  • September 2007 - We awarded the contract to Petersen Brothers Inc.
  • Spring 2008 - We began construction
  • Late summer 2008 - We expect to complete construction.

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Contact Assistant Project Engineer Janice Fahning with questions or concerns.

Environmental Protection
We will implement erosion control to protect the roadway in large storm events.

We make every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects.  We work to reduce impacts to wetlands, creeks and streams in the project area.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Drivers will benefit from safety improvements on US 2 and SR 92. Installing guardrail and removing fixed objects will reduce the risk and severity of collisions involving vehicles leaving the roadway.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

To learn more about Section 106 Tribal Consultation (also called government-to-government tribal consultation process) please visit WSDOT's Tribal Liaison page, where you'll find the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan and WSDOT's Tribal Consultation Policy (Adopted by the Transportation Commission on February 19, 2003).
