Overview
A major road rehabilitation project is underway on US 2 between Gold Bar and Skykomish. Contractor crews are resurfacing three segments totaling almost 17 miles of roadway. The project is a split between chip sealing and repaving. Two segments totaling more than eight miles will be chip sealed, while the other eight-mile segment will get a new layer of asphalt.

Why is WSDOT resurfacing 17 miles of US 2 between Gold Bar and Skykomish?
It has been almost 20 years since some of these sections of US 2 were last repaved, and the highway is showing its age. Cracks, ruts and potholes are littered throughout this stretch of highway. This could create conditions where water can pool and freeze, making it difficult to drive. About 6,600 vehicles use this corridor every day, and about 6 percent of the total is truck traffic.

The End Result
This project will improve driver safety, the ride quality of the highway and extend the life of the roadway. It will also reduce the potential for emergency closures and costly repairs.

Project Benefits
• Preserves infrastructure and extends the life of the highway.
• Reduces the need for costly emergency maintenance repairs and unexpected closures.
