Project Facts

- The 2000 US2/97 Safety Corridor Study previously identified this as a High Accident Corridor, making it a priority.
Summer 2008
Project progress and traffic impacts are available on the
weekly construction updates.
Construction began May 5th and will take about 3 months to complete. This project was renamed US2/97 West of Cashmere-Safety Improvements and combined with another project that installs a new traffic signal and advanced warning beacons at the US2/97-Goodwin Road intersection, west of Cashmere. Learn details of that project by clicking on Related Projects in the column to the left.
This Collision Reduction Safety Improvement project installs median barrier between Cashmere and the US 2/97 Blewett Junction, excluding the intersections.
Why is WSDOT
installing median barrier through this section of US 2/97?
The purpose of this project is to eliminate head-on/crossover collisions in this area previously identified as a High Accident Corridor (HAC).
The 2002 US 2/97 Safety Corridor Study (pdf 1.86 mb) recommends short and long term projects to address these "areas of potential improvement" between the Big Y interchange and Wenatchee. This project was recommended in the study.
The End Result
6.17 miles of concrete jersey barrier divided highway from Cashmere to the Blewett Junction that reduces cross-over accidents and increases safety.
Project Benefits
- Reduced median crossover collisions
- Improved safety
What is the project timeline?
Construction begins on May 5th and will be complete in 3 months.
Public Involvement
A public open house was held at the Cashmere Riverside Center on June 6th, 2007 to describe the project's access impacts and get input from the public who would be affected. The project was also detailed in presentations to the Cashmere Town Council and the Leavenworth Town Council at public meetings in April and May.
