On Oct. 1, 2013, a washout three miles east of White Pass, closed US 12 from Packwood to Naches for three days while crews assessed the stability of the highway along the hillside and determined the next steps.
On Oct. 4, 2013, Gov. Jay Inslee signed a proclamation allowing WSDOT and local agencies to pursue federal emergency relief funds to restore the highway.
Crews reopened US 12 to one lane alternating traffic after the emergency declaration to reinforce the wall supporting the highway and repair drainage systems.
On Nov. 8, 2013, both lanes of US 12 reopened for winter travel.
