Four-Laning US 12 - Frequently Asked Questions

Phase 1 - McNary Pool to Attalia

Q: What is the timeline for this project?
A: McNary Pool to Attalia Timeline

Q: When will the new lanes be open to traffic?
A: Construction is currently two months ahead of schedule. We anticipate the new lanes will be open to traffic by July.

Q: Why did you build Casey pond?
A: There were two reasons to build Casey pond. First, we needed the the material excavated from the pond site to build the additional lanes. Secondly, we needed to create new wetlands to offset the ones impacted by constructing the new lanes.

Phase 2 - SR 124 to McNary Pool

Q: What is the timeline for this project?
A: SR 124 to McNary Timeline

Q: What is going to happen to the intersection of Humorist and US 12?
A
: The intersection, along with the signal system, will be widened to accommodate the two new lanes. It will still remain a signalized intersection with pedestrian crosswalks. An overpass will not be constructed.

Q: What roads will be closed?
A: To further enhance the safety of this new highway, some access points need to be closed. Both Maple Street and Basin Drive intersections will be closed, along with a few private driveways. Frontage roads will be constructed to provide access to the properties that are affected by these closures.

Q: What will happen to the SR 124/US 12 intersection?
A: WSDOT is currently evaluating whether or not a signal should be placed at this intersection. If we decide a signal is not going to be constructed, the intersection will remain as it is. In addition, we are looking at possible alternatives to replace the existing intersection with on- and off-ramps and an overpass. However, we recognize a future need and believe this is the best time to begin looking at possibilities and to determine what it would look like, where it could go, and what it may cost.

Q: What is going to happen to the Hanson Loop Road/ US 12 intersection?
A: This intersection will remain open and drivers will be allowed to safely turn left and right, both to and from US 12, in left and right turn lanes. A signal will not be constructed at this location.

Phase 3 - Attalia Vicinity

Q: What is the timeline for this project?
A: Attalia Vicinity Timeline

Phase 4 - Planning Study

Q: What is the timeline for this project?
A: Wallula to Walla Walla Timeline

Q: Where is the road going to go?
A: A route has not yet been selected. Currently, we've got a thousand-foot corridor one-half to three-quarters of a miles north of Touchet, and one within one-quarter of a mile north of Lowden for further analysis (See visual details of the evaluation areas.).

Q: Where will the interchanges go?
A: WSDOT is working with a traffic consultant to conduct a study which will include location of intersections and future interchange locations. We will publish our findings at a later time.

Q: Are you going to build an outlook in Wallula?
A: We currently have no plans to build an outlook in Wallula. However, the US Fish and Wildlife Service is building one which will overlook Sanctuary Pond and McNary National Wildlife Refuge. For more information, please contact Gary Hagedorn, project leader with US Fish and Wildlife at 509-545-8588.
