Survey crews in a recently-cleared area near Clemons Road on US 12. The widened roadway makes room for a longer merge lane in the center median.
Project Facts
  • This one-mile section of US 12 has been identified as a high accident corridor.
  • The intersection of US 12 and Clemons Road is in an area of increasing residential development, resulting in higher traffic volumes.
  • WSDOT has identified cost-effective safety improvements that will reduce the frequency and severity of collisions within this one-mile section of US 12.

Project Status

May 2008

Clemons Road to US 12 closes next week

This project widens and makes safety improvements to US 12 between milepost 7.0 and 8.0, east of Aberdeen in Grays Harbor County.

Construction started in April 2008. Nova Contracting, Inc. of Olympia is the contractor.

During construction, motorists can expect lane restrictions during daylight hours on US 12 and short-term closures of Clemons Road. Motorists should use the signed detour route on Devonshire Road during the Clemons Road closures.

Why is WSDOT making safety improvements on this section of US 12?

This one-mile section of US 12 has been identified as a high accident corridor, based on collision data collected over the last several years. Recent residential development has increased traffic volumes, increasing the potential for collisions.

The project has two major safety components:

  • A relocated right-turn lane from eastbound US 12 to Clemons Road. The new lane increases sight distance for motorists turning onto US 12.
  • A wider, longer merge lane for motorists headed westbound on US 12 from the south side of Clemons road. The longer merge lane provides motorists more time to reach highway speeds before merging with westbound US 12 traffic.

Additional improvements include improved lighting, new guardrail, a wider roadway, and removal of potential roadside hazards.

The End Result
The end result will be increased overall safety and a reduction in the frequency and severity of collisions in this one-mile section of US 12.

Project Benefits

  • Improved Safety. This project will reduce the frequency and severity of collisions by improving sight distance and eliminating roadside hazards where possible.
  • Reduced Congestion. Safety improvements at the Clemons Road intersection also improve mobility.
  • Protect Environment. New stormwater treatment facilities reduce pollutants from highway runoff.

What is the project timeline?
Construction began in April 2008. The project is scheduled to be operationally complete in June 2008.

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Please contact the Aberdeen project office at 360-533-9352 with your questions or concerns.

Environmental Protection
WSDOT is committed to preserving the environment and makes every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects. A detailed analysis of the project's environmental impacts has been completed and an appropriate plan for mitigation of adverse impacts has been developed and documented as part of the Environmental Documentation and Environmental Permitting processes.

Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Safety improvements along this one-mile segment of US 12 will reduce the frequency and severity of collisions. Increased driver sight distance, a separated right turn lane and a longer acceleration lane will contribute improved safety at the Clemons Road intersection.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
This project does not impact tribal resources.

WSDOT seeks to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

To learn more about the tribal consultation process please visit WSDOT's Tribal Liaison page, where you'll find links to WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan and WSDOT's Tribal Consultation Policy (Adopted by the Transportation Commission on Feb. 19, 2003).
