US 12 - 40th Ave Interchange Improvements - Complete May 2007

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending September 2007

Project Title & Location
US 12 - Yakima - 40th Avenue Interchange Improvements

Project Description
This project improves safety and traffic flow at the US 12/40th Avenue Interchange. Improvements include a second lane for the eastbound on-ramp, efficient signal phasing, and improved connections between the Yakima Greenway and local bike and pedestrian pathways. These upgrades will increase capacity, improve traffic mobility, and encourage commercial and industrial development in this area.

Contractor/Consultant
Superior Paving of Yakima, WA

Recent Progress
The Contractor opened the new lanes and greenway path to traffic on May 30, 2007. WSDOT celebrated the opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on the Yakima Greenway path extension to the intersection. All work is complete except for roadside plantings.

Design Construction Impacts
First flashing yellow signal phasing installed and activated in the Yakima area.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
The project will be a SEPA - Determination of Non-Significance.  The project will treat new stormwater runoff onsite as a result of new roadway constructed.

Impacts to Traffic
Reconstruction of the intersection will require a single lane closure.  Construction of the westbound on ramp will require a lane closure on US 12 at times.  Intersection closures will cause back-ups during high traffic flows.
