US 12 - 40th Ave Interchange Improvements - Complete May 2007

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending March 2007

Project Title & Location
US 12 - Yakima - 40th Avenue Interchange Improvements

Project Description
This project improves safety and traffic flow at the US 12/40th Avenue Interchange. Improvements include a second lane for the eastbound on-ramp, efficient signal phasing, and improved connections between the Yakima Greenway and local bike and pedestrian pathways. These upgrades will increase capacity, improve traffic mobility, and encourage commercial and industrial development in this area.

Contractor/Consultant
Superior Paving of Yakima, WA

Recent Progress
The project was awarded on 12/11/06.  The Contractor installed a sewer crossing and an irrigation line extension in March prior to irrigation water turn on.  WSDOT held a project ground breaking on March 21st to celebrate the start of work.

Design Construction Impacts
The Contractor submitted a proposal to tunnel the new sewer line across the interchange ramps instead of closing the ramps for a weekend to allow for excavation.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
The project will be a SEPA - Determination of Non-Significance.  The project will treat new stormwater runoff onsite as a result of new roadway constructed.

Impacts to Traffic
This project may require the westbound off and the eastbound on ramps to be closed one weekend to install a City of Yakima Sewer crossing.  Reconstruction of the intersection will require a single lane closure.  Construction of the westbound on ramp will require a lane closure on US 12 at times.  Intersection closures will cause back-ups during high traffic flows.
