US 101 - Coffee Creek - Remove Fish Barrier

  • During summer of 2018, crews will realign a portion of Coffee Creek in order to remove barriers to fish. Coffee Creek is a tributary to Goldsborough Creek.

Why is WSDOT removing barriers to fish on Coffee Creek? 

This project is part of WSDOT's ongoing efforts to identify and remove culverts under state highways that are barriers to fish passage.

In 2013, a federal court injunction required a significant increase in efforts to remove state-owned culverts that block habitat for salmon and steelhead. In addition to meeting that requirement, this project also supports WSDOT’s environmental stewardship strategic goal.

The culverts that carry a portion of Coffee Creek under US 101 pose a barrier to fish during times of high and low water flows. The culverts under the highway on- and off-ramps also are barriers to fish passage.

The End Result
Fish will benefit as the water will be slower and deeper as crews make environmental changes to closely replicate a natural stream.

Project Benefits
The existing stream channel will be graded to simulate a natural streambed and will open over 13 miles of potential upstream habitat for salmon and steelhead. This will be accomplished by slowing the velocity of the stream during times of high water and providing a deeper channel during times of low flowing water.

Additionally, stream banks will be replanted to ensure a natural stream environment.
