US 101 - West Olympia Access Study

Status

February 2010

  • The study team is currently in the process of evaluating a third interchange modification option that has been proposed by the City of Olympia staff. This ‘hybrid’ option takes selected proposed improvements from the Black Lake and Evergreen interchange improvement scenarios and combines them into one.
  • The study consultant Parametrix is currently preparing a preliminary design layout of the ‘hybrid’ alternative along with conducting traffic analysis of the proposal.
  • The study technical group is scheduled to meet in early 2010 to review the initial preliminary design concept and traffic analysis results.

Why is WSDOT studying US 101?
The West Olympia Access Study is being done in partnership with the City of Olympia. Olympia's west side continues development with more stores, offices, churches, medical services and housing. US 101 and the City's streets are components in a transportation network that serve the West Olympia area. What changes to the transportation system are needed to support the growth?

The West Olympia Access Study will evaluate WSDOT's highway system and the City's street network to determine how well they work together to support the diverse transportation needs of this area.

The End Result
The goal is to come up with a workable strategy for meeting the mobility needs of West Olympia neighborhoods, businesses, employers and service providers for decades to come. The product of the study will be a plan that outlines how US 101 and the City's streets should be developed to accommodate the increasing traffic and development in the area while preserving US 101 as a regional transportation feature.

Project Benefits
The study will result in a plan that will identify specific improvements for the state highway and city streets that will improve the transportation network in the West Olympia area.

These improvements will be included in the local and regional plans and Highway System Plan, making them eligible to compete for funding.

What is the project timeline?
The public involvement phase of the study began in fall 2006. A summary report of the technical analysis and study findings that will summarize the study feasibility phase will be completed late winter/early spring 2009.
