Project Title & Location
US 101/Purdy Creek Bridge -Replace Bridge (Mason County)
|
Project Description
This project replaces the US 101 Purdy Creek Bridge in the Skokomish River Valley in Mason County. The Purdy Creek Bridge site is the lowest point of US 101. The hydraulics of the Lower Skokomish River frequently results in floods, closing US 101. This new bridge will accommodate the 100-year flood as well as possible changes to the course of the Skokomish River by constructing a raised roadway near Purdy Creek with a sufficient opening for flood water to pass through.

Design Construction Impacts
The lower Skokomish River basin has been the subject of numerous studies undertaken by various governmental and tribal entities. These studies recommend several improvements throughout the Skokomish River Valley. Replacing Purdy Creek Bridge with a raised roadway and a longer span is one recommended improvement. This project replaces the existing timber-trestle bridge with a new concrete structure. The new bridge will be longer and higher than the existing bridge, reducing the risk of closure due to flooding or high water.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
The project is being constructed in accordance with the project permits. The project Best Management Practices are being maintained and are in good working order.
|
Impacts to Traffic
The new bridge will be adjacent to the existing. A detour was constructed to utilize the existing bridge and a portion of the existing roadway to maintain two lanes of traffic during construction. Two short duration lane reductions to one-lane one-way traffic under temporary signal system will be required.
