US 101 - Purdy Creek Bridge - Complete September 2009

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2006

Project Title & Location
US 101 - Purdy Creek Bridge - Mason County

Project Description
This project replaces the US 101 Purdy Creek Bridge in the Skokomish River Valley in Mason County. The Purdy Creek Bridge site is the lowest point of US 101. The hydraulics of the Lower Skokomish River frequently results in floods, closing US 101. This new bridge will accommodate the 100-year flood as well as possible changes to the course of the Skokomish River by constructing a raised roadway near Purdy Creek with a sufficient opening for flood water to pass through.

Contractor/Consultant
Project not yet advertised or awarded.

Recent Progress
The structure length for the new bridge has been finalized at 350-feet, this will provide a balance between the needs of the highway and local concerns.  With the hydraulic design effort completed, the focus has shifted to environmental documentation and plans development.  The project office will continue to coordinate with Mason County and the Skokomish Tribe as these efforts move forward.

Design Construction Impacts

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
This project design is governed by local flood ordinances.  The project design office is working with local governments in order to develop the best solution for the new bridge.

Impacts to Traffic
The new bridge will be built on a new alignment.  This will allow traffic to utilize the existing bridge and roadway, minimizing traffic impacts to US 101 during construction.
