Status

August 2008

WSDOT has started this work in the 03-05 biennium.  Please see the September 2003 edition of the Department's "Gray Notebook"

Why is WSDOT replacing or retrofitting guardrail around the state?
There is existing guardrail that does not meet current safety standards of steel rail on wood posts at 6 foot 3 inch centers. This existing guardrail typically consists of concrete posts on 12 foot 6 inch centers with cable, single half-moon ("C" shaped rail), or timber rail. Some of this guardrail is over 35 years old.

The End Result
This work will reduce the likelihood  of vehicles penetrating through the rail and going over embankments.

Project Benefits
The benefits of this project will be reduced risk of severe accidents at the location of substandard guardrail.

What is the project timeline?
The first priority is upgrading substandard guardrail. Projects to replace currently identified substandard rail will begin by June 2007. The second priority will be upgrading other substandard guardrail features.
