Work to strengthen the Aurora Bridge started in 2000. A new phase of work is in design to strengthen the unique support columns, trusses, crossbeams and girders of the landmark.The bridge has cruciform "+" shaped columns that make it architecturally unique as well as a challenge to strengthen against earthquakes using steel column jackets.There are 48 columns supporting the 1932 bridge. This project targets 18.Seven sample columns were created to test how they react in an earthquake and how different wraps would prevent damage.Without seismic reinforcement, large shear cracks appeared in this test sample during a simulated earthquake."Flexural" cracking appeared in this test sample during a simulated earthquake.
