Overview

WSDOT replaced more than 50 concrete panels on a 3.2-mile section of SR 900/Martin Luther King Junior Way South between the Tukwila North City Limits and the SR 167 intersection in the spring and summer of 2016.

Contractor crews from MidMountain Contractors also fully replaced a section of the highway just south of the I-5 interchange. All the concrete was removed and new gravel was brought in to rebuild the road base in an area that was settling. Then this area was repaved with a thick layer of new asphalt.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
Improving the highway surface eliminated existing potholes and will help prevent future potholes, cracks and wheel ruts, making for a smoother, safer ride for drivers.
Dollar Sign Glyph Economic Incentive
This project reduces the need for emergency pavement repairs, which are costly to taxpayers and can cause additional congestion during peak commute hours. Removing the concrete at the northern end, rebuilding the roadbed and placing new asphalt is less expensive than placing all new concrete. In the event the roadway begins settling again in the decades ahead, it will be cheaper to replace the asphalt than tear up concrete again.
