SR 900 - SE 78th Street to Newport Way

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2003

Project Title & Location

SR900 SE 78th Vic to Newport Way -- Issaquah

Project Description
This project will widen SR 900 from SE 78th vicinity north to Newport Way from 2 to 4 lanes and a two way left turn lane. The purpose is to add width and capacity to SR 900 to improve operations and safety.

Contractor/Consultant
Project not yet advertised or awarded.

Recent Progress

This project was divided into two stages because of shortage of funds.  The first stage from Newport Way to I-90, which includes HOV and bus only lanes, is under contract.  Design activity on the second stage with Nickel funds from SE 78th to Newport Way is now underway.   Have been gathering design information and R/W documents.  Survey work  and wetland delineation are nearly complete.   Gave project update to City Council in February 04.

Design Construction Impacts

Balancing of impacts will be necessary.  Widening to the east will cause wetland impacts.  Widening to the west will require retaining walls and possible residence relocations.   Will be coordinating with the City of Issaquah.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
R/W will be required for the lane widening and for mitigation of environmental impacts.  Walls and steep slopes will be used to minimize impacts to wetlands.  The existing bridge over Tibbetts creek will be replaced with a new structure for increased traffic carrying capacity.

Impacts to Traffic
The second stage project is targeted to improve efficiency of operation of the general-purpose lanes.   An HOV and bus only lanes will be in the first stage only.  Construction will require non-peak lane closures and temporary detours.
